Classical Conversations CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Tutor Plans

Here is everything that I did with my Masters class for week 13 in cycle 2 of Classical Conversations!

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Memory Work

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Timeline

cc cycle 2 week 13 timeline ideas classical conversations

This week for timeline, I had my class play a minute-to-win-it type of game where the students wore mini hand finger puppets and had to put the timeline cards in order.

This a great game for all classes except the Abecedarians because the students should be able to read the cards.

To play, give one student all 7 timeline cards and two finger hand puppets.

Have the class, except the student playing, sing the timeline song for that week while the student attempts to place the cards in order. The student can only use the finger puppet hands.

If the student gets all of them in the correct order before the class is done singing, the student wins.

Repeat for each student.

Supplies needed to play:

  • 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
  • 2 hand finger puppets

Approximate time it takes to play: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Math

This week I introduced the “Kingdom of Gallon” that I learned from Love, Mrs. C on YouTube.

This is how it goes:

In the Kingdom of Gallon, there are four queens of their quart. Each queen has two pint-sized princesses. Each princess has two cup-sized cats and each cat drinks 8 fluid ounces of milk every day.

This is probably best to do on paper with a pen or pencil because the dry erase marker was too thick to draw my 8s properly

So, what you do is pass out a piece of paper and a pencil to each student. You will need one yourself or use the whiteboard.

Start reading the story and draw each letter (or number) when you get to it.

Draw a large “G” on the paper as you introduce the Kingdom of Gallon. It should take up the whole piece of paper.

Then, draw four “Q”s inside of the “G” as you explain the four queens of their quart.

Draw two “P”s inside of each of the four “Q”s as you explain the two princesses.

Draw two “C”s inside each of the “P”s as you explain the two cup-sized cats.

Draw an “8” inside each of the “C”s as you explain that each cat drinks 8 fluid ounces of milk every day.

After drawing, I read this week’s math memory, showing the symbols as I read.

I then introduced a song as an alternative method of memorizing the material.

Here is the song that I used:

Supplies needed for Math: paper and pencil for each student and yourself

Approximate time it takes: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 History

My class loves playing Hot or Cold for history so we have done it almost every week since I introduced it week 3.

To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.

Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.

This week, we hid a Domino train for the steam engine and because the song starts with a train whistle.

I use tally marks as we recite the memory work so I remember how many repetitions we have completed

Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.

Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.

The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.

Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold

  • object to hide – I used a Dominos train
  • timer – if students are likely to be indecisive on where to hide the object, set a 30 second timer

Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Latin

I informed the class that a way to remember the present tense is with the sentence:

You see a present under the Christmas tree and say “O” a PRESENT for me! And because it isn’t Christmas yet, your mom says “mus, tis, nt”.

I got the sentence from Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube. Here is the video I referenced:

To get the 7 repetitions:

  1. Read the memory work
  2. Introduce the sentence as a memory prompt
  3. Have students turn and face a partner. One will be the parent and one will be the student. The student sings “o, s, t” and then the parent sings and waves their finger “mus, tis, nt”
  4. Repeat until 7 repetitions have been completed.

Supplies needed for Latin: None

Approximate time needed for Latin: 3 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Science

This week we kept science simple and just did a song.

The song goes to the tune of “There’s a Hole in the Bucket.”

Here is the video from Julie Keller on YouTube here:

Supplies needed for science: None

Approximate time needed for science: 2 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 English

We finished our indefinite pronouns to the tune Here Comes Santa Claus.

I first read this week’s memory work then sang the song starting from this week’s memory work.

Then, I sang the song from the beginning to the end.

Lastly, I invited the class to sing along with me for the rest of the repetitions.

I got the song from Bapento on YouTube:

Supplies needed for English: None

Approximate time needed for English – 3 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Geography

This week I decided not to do a song since there were only four components.

To get our repetitions in, this is what I did:

  1. I read the components of Northern European Countries
  2. I read and had them trace the locations on their maps
  3. I said show me Norway/Sweden/Finland/Denmark
  4. I said tell me the Northern European Countries
  5. I had the students both tell me and show me the countries
  6. I had them erase Norway/Sweden/Finland/Denmark
  7. I asked them review questions to either say the name in the question or have them tell me the name in the answer

Here are the review questions I asked for the Northern European Countries:

  1. What peninsula are Norway and Sweden on? (Scandinavian)
  2. Which of the Northern European Countries are on the Baltic Sea? (Sweden and Finland)
  3. Which of the Northern European Countries are on the North Sea? (Denmark and Norway)

Supplies needed for geography:

  • dry erase map for each student
  • dry erase marker for each student
  • eraser for each student

Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Great Artists

This week we learned about Rembrandt Van Rijn.

I used the print out that my director gave me which was by Johanna Spaulding.

The class took turns reading the paper. I made sure to start by reading his birth date and the day he died and referencing it to the timeline song.

I read the short bio and then had the class each read one paragraph in the boxes of information.

For the activity, the students completed the activity on page 29 of Discovering Great Artists.

Each student looked at themselves in a mirror and sketched a self portrait. I reminded them of OiLS as they drew.

To finish the sketch, I had them shade in one half of their drawing, leaving a triangle under the eye unshaded, to mimic Rembrandt’s style of drawing.

Supplies needed for week 13 Great Artists:

  • mirror, paper, and pencil for each student

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Science

For science this week we did the spoon bell experiment and the humming glass experiment.

I use the printouts from CC Connected that my director provided me from the Ezine.

The kids really liked both of these experiments! They each had a chance to listen to the spoon and to create sound with the glass.

CC Cycle 2 Week 13 Review

cc cycle 2 week 13 tutor plans review games masters

For review this week, we played Gab or Guts.

This is a simple game to both play and set up which is great on days you need something easy.

Plus, the kids really enjoy this game.

Gab or Guts is a play on Truth or Dare. I got this game from Teachers Pay Teachers.

I took out a few of the cards that didn’t seem appropriate for my Master’s class but overall everything is pretty clean and safe!
