Here is everything that I did with my Masters class for week 17 in cycle 2 of Classical Conversations!
Contents
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Memory Work
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Timeline
This week for timeline, I had my two kids hide the 7 cards before class started.
I had exactly 7 students in my class so it was perfect for them to find the cards while we listened to/sang this week’s Timeline song.
My tip – watch where the cards get hidden if your own kids are helping you. We almost didn’t find the last card and since I didn’t watch my kids hide them, I wasn’t sure where they were either!
Supplies needed to play:
- 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
Approximate time it takes to play: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Math
This week for math was really fun as many of my students love the geometry song on YouTube.
Here is the video to the song:
It was really hard to get my students to only sing the square portion. We decided to do just the square for the first 6 repetitions and then I allowed them to sing the whole song for the 7th repetitions.
Encourage the class to snap their fingers or clap their hands along with the song!
Supplies needed for Math: None
Approximate time it takes: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 History

My class loves playing Hot or Cold for history so we have done it almost every week since I introduced it week 3.
To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.
Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.
This week, we hid an LED remote. At this point, I’ve been struggling to find a new idea for all of these world war history sentences but since it was about leaders, I thought leaders have ideas, ideas are symbolized as light bulbs, LED remotes are safer than hiding a light bulb.
Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.
Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.
The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.
Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold:
- object to hide – I used an LED remote to symbolize ideas/leadership
- timer – if students are likely to be indecisive on where to hide the object, set a 30 second timer
Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Latin
I reminded the class that a way to remember the future tense is with the sentence:
In the future, the three blind mice will wear a bow.
I got the sentence idea from Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube. Here is the video I referenced:
I still had my three bows and three pairs of sunglasses that I used for week 5 so I had my own kids pass out three bows before class started. This way, the “volunteers” would be randomized.
Then, I had them pass out a pair of sunglasses to go with each bow.
When it was time for Latin memory work, I called the people up that had a bow and pair of sunglasses on their desk.
I had them model the attire as we sang along to the Latin song twice and then one time for a shortened version.

Supplies needed for Latin: 3 bows (I just printed mine on cardstock) and 3 pairs of sunglasses
Approximate time needed for Latin: 2 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Science
I have a couple of baseball fans in my Masters class so this song by Lindsay Campbell on YouTube was super fun for weeks 16-18 science.
The tune goes along to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
Here is the YouTube video:
We sang just this week’s science 4 times, then we sang weeks 16 and 17 together (the first and second laws of motion) for the last 3 repetitions.
Supplies needed for science: None
Approximate time needed for science: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 English
This week I had a fun video that I found on YouTube that I had planned on doing; HOWEVER, all of my students knew the definition of a noun already. So, in class we ended up just saying them together 7 times.
I had to have them start over a couple times because they wanted to rush through – the downside of the Masters class knowing so much material. But it all worked out.
In case your class doesn’t have this memorized or you want to plan something fun anyway, here is the YouTube video I found with hand motions.
Supplies needed for English: None
Approximate time needed for English – 3 minutes for planned activity, 1 minute for reading through
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Geography
This week I found a fun song that went to the tune of London Bridge.
Here is the video by Kristen Stevenson:
To get our repetitions in, this is what I did:
- I read the components of the Central European Countries
- I read and had them trace the locations on their maps
- I said show me Netherlands/Belgium/Luxumberg/Germany/Switzerland
- I introduced the song to them
- I had the class sing the song with me as we pointed to the countries for repetitions 5 and 6
- Singing all together
- Questions

Here are the review questions I asked for the Central European Countries:
- Is Switzerland or Luxembourg closer to London (London ties into the song, too!)? (Luxembourg)
- What body of water is next to Belgium? (English Channel)
- What country is directly west of Poland? (Germany)
- Is the Netherlands or Switzerland closer to Denmark? (Netherlands)
Supplies needed for geography:
- dry erase map for each student
- dry erase marker for each student
- eraser for each student
Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Great Artists
This week we learned about Berthe Morisot.
I used the print out that my director gave me which was by Johanna Spaulding.
I read the short bio quickly and then our community met in the sanctuary at our church building to do art together.
For the activity, the students completed the activity in Discovering Great Artists.
For our textures in class, we used sugar, flour, and coffee grounds. You can use any add in that you can think of.
We decided to recreate this one at home and used salt, sugar, flour, kinetic sand, and glitter.
I highly recommend doing flour for one of them – it was so satisfying painting with such an opaque paint!
Salt was interesting which I kind of guessed would happen – it pulls the water from the paint so you end up with a really watery yet clumpy paint. My son liked it for mimicking rain but it mostly just annoyed me.
Here are some of our results:

Remember to have your students bring a paint smock or play shirt for this quarter of CC!
Also, this week the paint took a longer time to dry – especially the coffee grounds. So if you can change around your schedule, do art towards the beginning of class.
Supplies needed for week 14 Great Artists:
- tempera paints, cups for mixing, various textures (we used sugar, flour, and coffee grounds in class), card stock, paint brushes, popsicle sticks
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Science Experiment
For science this week we did the Energy Change and Snap experiments in the Van Cleeve book.
I use the printouts from CC Connected that my director provided me from the Ezine.
Energy Change Experiment
I like to start by reading the intro on the Ezine print out and then asking some or all of the questions in the Question and Research sections of the print out.
I then explain what the experiment will be (without actually doing it) and ask the students what their hypothesis is. Sometimes the class all agrees on one hypothesis and other times we have multiple hypotheses.
I have the students collect their data (usually just with their senses and not writing anything down) during the experiment and then I ask students to share what they observed during the Analysis portion of the script.
We found that our experiment did support our hypothesis.
We ended by reading the conclusion on the Ezine print out.
Snap Experiment
We conducted this experiment in the same order as the Snap experiment. This one was really quick so I had each student line up and take turns pulling the paper away from the soda can.
We also practiced with various speeds – how slowly can we do it to wear the paper still snaps and how quickly can we do it.
I just had to remind students to not let the soda can fall on the ground!
This helped fill the time and inspire more conversation.
CC Cycle 2 Week 17 Review
For review this week, we combined tutor classes (returning family interview time!) so we lined up all of the Foundations/Essentials students and had them do various things from one side of the room to the other.
The tutor leading the review would ask about 3 questions, then I would roll a die which said what the students would do.
Here are some of the things we had on the die:
- Hop
- Burpees
- Bear Crawl
- Crab Walk
- Skip
- … something else that I can’t remember!
It’s best to write on a whiteboard die with wet erase markers or just use a foam die and permanent marker.
Supplies needed for review:
- Large area of space (we used the sanctuary of our church)
- Die with 6 actions written on it
