Here is everything that I did with my Masters class for week 18 in cycle 2 of Classical Conversations!

CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Memory Work
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Timeline

This week for timeline, I had the class shoot the Timeline cards with a bow and arrow. I’m assuming it goes without saying that this wasn’t a real bow and arrow but a plastic one with the arrows having a suction cup on the would-be pointy end.
It was the day of our Valentine’s Day card exchange so I figured the bow and arrow went pretty well on theme.
That being said, the bow and arrow goes great with cycle 2 anyway due to the Medieval theme!
To get in our 7 repetitions (we actually had 8 repetitions because I have 8 students in my class) we sang the Timeline song together and then one person would take a shot.
We would rotate through after each repetition until everyone had a chance to shoot.
Supplies needed to play:
- 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
- Bow and arrow (I found mine on Amazon for $20 and my kids at home love playing with it too)
Approximate time it takes to play: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Math

This week for math was really fun as many of my students love the geometry song on YouTube.
Here is the video to the song:
It was really hard to get my students to only sing the triangle portion. We decided to do just the triangle for the first 6 repetitions and then I allowed them to sing the whole song for the 7th repetitions.
Encourage the class to snap their fingers or clap their hands along with the song!
Supplies needed for Math: None
Approximate time it takes: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 History
My class loves playing Hot or Cold for history so we have done it almost every week since I introduced it week 3.
To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.
Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.
This week, we hid a fabric rose for Roosevelt.

Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.
Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.
The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.
Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold:
- object to hide – I used a fabric rose for Roosevelt
- timer – if students are likely to be indecisive on where to hide the object, set a 30 second timer
Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Latin
I reminded the class that a way to remember the future tense is with the sentence:
In the future, the three blind mice will wear a bow.
I got the sentence idea from Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube. Here is the video I referenced:
This week we simply sang through the song 2x and then sang it once halfway through to get the 7 repetitions.
Supplies needed for Latin: None
Approximate time needed for Latin: 1 minute
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Science
I have a couple of baseball fans in my Masters class so this song by Lindsay Campbell on YouTube was super fun for weeks 16-18 science.
The tune goes along to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
Here is the YouTube video:
This week I decided we’d just sing Newton’s third law since we reviewed Newton’s first and second laws the last two weeks.
I had the class partner up (you could do a group of 3 if needed) and stand close to each other.
They tossed a sand bag to each other while singing one time through.
Then, they each took one step back and tossed back and forth for the second time.
Repeat each time for 7 total repetitions, taking a step back each time.

This got pretty crazy in my class of all boys as I found them taking small leaps back instead of steps but they had fun and no one got hurt.
Supplies needed for science:
- 3-4 sand bags (or mini bean bags) depending on how many students you have
Approximate time needed for science: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 English
This week I had a fun video that I found on YouTube that related to the Essentials program, which most of my students are in this year.
I made sure to write this week’s memory work in the order for SPIDO:
- Subject
- Possessive
- Indirect Object
- Direct Object
- Object of the Preposition
I introduced the acronym to them for the first repetition, then added the song. The class is good about joining so it made for a quick 7 repetitions.
Here is the YouTube song that we used:
Supplies needed for English: None
Approximate time needed for English – 3 minutes for planned activity, 1 minute for reading through
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Geography
This week I found a fun song by Home Video Variety Show. I pretty much always love their stuff but this weeks tune just got stuck in my head so it was perfect.
Here is the video:
To get our repetitions in, this is what I did:
- I read the components of the Central European Countries
- I read and had them trace the locations on their maps
- I said show me Italy/Austria/Hungary/Czechia/Slovakia
- I introduced the song to them
- I had the class sing the song with me as we pointed to the countries for repetitions 5 and 6
- Singing all together
- Questions
Here are the review questions I asked for the Central European Countries:
- What country borders both Austria to the west and Italy to the north? (Switzerland)
- What river runs through Czechia? (Elbe)
- What river runs through Hungary? (Danube)
- What baltic country is north of Slovakia? (Poland)
Supplies needed for geography:
- dry erase map for each student
- dry erase marker for each student
- eraser for each student
Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Great Artists
This week we learned about Van Gogh.
I used the print out that my director gave me which was by Johanna Spaulding.
I read the short bio quickly and then our community met in the sanctuary at our church building to do art together.
As a heads up: the bio on this printout gets dark. It talks about how Van Gogh shot himself to take his own life and other hard things to read. Make sure to read this ahead of time (I wish I had) and adjust to your class maturity level as needed.
For the activity, the students completed the activity in Discovering Great Artists.
Most of the students in my class seemed familiar with Starry Night and decided to recreate that painting.
We talked about how the painting looked like a mosaic rather than a painting and how we could try to achieve that effect with paint.
Remember to have your students bring a paint smock or play shirt for this quarter of CC!
Supplies needed for week 18 Great Artists:
- tempera paints, black paper, paper scraps, scissors, glue, and paintbrushes
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Science Experiment
For science this week we did the Lifter and Ramp experiments in the Van Cleeve book.
I use the printouts from CC Connected that my director provided me from the Ezine.
Lifter Experiment
I like to start by reading the intro on the Ezine print out and then asking some or all of the questions in the Question and Research sections of the print out.
I then explain what the experiment will be (without actually doing it) and ask the students what their hypothesis is. Sometimes the class all agrees on one hypothesis and other times we have multiple hypotheses.
This week they did not agree on the hypothesis so we had two.
Rather than demonstrate the activity myself, I had each student demonstrate it for themselves. We had two seemingly different results so I invited one person from each “camp” to come up and show us what they were doing.
I have the students collect their data (usually just with their senses and not writing anything down) during the experiment and then I ask students to share what they observed during the Analysis portion of the script.
We found that one student wasn’t twisting the screw with their fingers but rather moved with the screw. Once we figured out what variable was different between the two demos, we arrived at a final conclusion.
We ended by reading the conclusion on the Ezine print out.
Ramp Experiment
We conducted this experiment in the same order as the Lifter experiment.
I had already cut out a ramp (triangle) and colored along the edge of the hypotenuse.
This experiment went fairly quick but the discussion was prompted well in the Ezine print out.
CC Cycle 2 Week 18 Review

For review this week, we played Pie Face. I did this on the last day of the quarter for Q1 and Q2 and the students always have a fun time.
If you haven’t played Pie Face, players spin to see how many clicks they have to rotate on a hand that may or may not fling whipped cream into their face.
The suspense really builds in my class so it is a lot of fun. Sometimes you will spin a 6 but not get whipped cream whereas sometimes you will spin a 1 and get whipped cream in the face.
I start with one question per play and as we go along I start adding more questions if we need to hurry through.
Supplies needed for Pie Face:
- Pie Face game
- whipped cream
- lots of wet paper towels for the students and something to clean the table/game with – we played in the kitchen this week so it was easy to wash the game in the sink afterward and wipe down the counters
