CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Memory Work
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Timeline
This week for timeline, I decided to try something new with my class – a word scramble.
At home, I scrambled up the timeline cards and then added a letter onto the back of each card. The word I chose was “outside” which was fun because it had a lot of vowels.
With each time through the timeline, a student would pick one card to turn over and reveal a letter.
The goal of the game was to unscramble the word before we had all 7 cards turned over/listened to all 7 repetitions.
I picked a difficult word and only the moms could unscramble it. I did give them a hint that it was in the science memory sentence this week but they still couldn’t get it.
I will probably do this one again in a few weeks!

Supplies needed to play:
- 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
- A 7 letter word with each letter on a small piece of paper
- Tape to tape the letters to the back of the cards
Approximate time it takes to play: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Math
This week for math was really fun as many of my students love the geometry song on YouTube.
Here is the video to the song:
It was really hard to get my students to only sing the rectangle portion. We decided to do just the rectangle for the first 6 repetitions and then I allowed them to sing the whole song for the 7th repetitions.
Encourage the class to snap their fingers or clap their hands along with the song!
Supplies needed for Math: None
Approximate time it takes: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 History
My class loves playing Hot or Cold for history so we have done it almost every week since I introduced it week 3.
To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.
Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.
This week, we hid a deflated world ball for how World War II began. It would have been difficult to hide it inflated.
Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.
Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.
The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.
Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold:
- object to hide – I used a deflated world ball
- timer – if students are likely to be indecisive on where to hide the object, set a 30 second timer
Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Latin
I reminded the class that a way to remember the present tense is with the question/answer:
What makes things imperfect? A Bomb.
I got the sentence idea from Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube. Here is the video I referenced:
To get the 7 repetitions in this week we simply sang the song twice (which accounted for six repetitions) and then I read the definition.
A tip I have for the second half of the year Latin is to sing during a transition to another subject. For example, do geography before Latin and then sing Latin while passing in maps.
Supplies needed for Latin: None
Approximate time needed for Latin: 1 minute
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Science
I have a couple of baseball fans in my Masters class so this song by Lindsay Campbell on YouTube was super fun for weeks 16-18 science.
The tune goes along to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
Here is the YouTube video:
We sang just this week’s science 6 times, the first repetition I just read the memory work. I was surprised that much of my class already knew Newton’s 1st Law of Motion from previous years in CC!
Supplies needed for science: None
Approximate time needed for science: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 English
This week I came up with some fun movements for the definition of a verb.
I assigned each student to pick a partner.
I told them that when I read the sentence, they would need to do specific actions whenever I read the words action, being, link, and helps.
Here are the movements:
- Action – jump
- Being – sit on the ground
- Link – clasp your hands together
- Helps – help your partner off the ground
I don’t do hand motions that often with my Masters class but I believe they are so helpful.
The class really liked this one!
If you have an odd number, do a grouping of 3 and they can help each other off the ground in a group of three.
Supplies needed for English: None
Approximate time needed for English – 3 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Geography
This week I found a fun song that went to the tune of Oh, My Darling.
Here is the video by Driven By Grace:
To get our repetitions in, this is what I did:
- I read the components of the Balkans
- I read and had them trace the locations on their maps
- I said show me Greece/Albania/Bulgaria/Slovenia/Romania
- I introduced the song to them
- I had the class sing the song with me as we pointed to the countries for repetitions 5 and 6
- Singing all together
- Questions
Here are the review questions I asked for the Balkans:
- What mountain range is in Romania? (Carpathians)
- What mountain range is in Slovenia? (Alps)
- What sea is Bulgaria next to? (Black Sea)
- What peninsula is Greece on? (Balkan)
- What sea is on the western border of Albania? (Mediterranean)
Supplies needed for geography:
- dry erase map for each student
- dry erase marker for each student
- eraser for each student
Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Great Artists
This week we learned about Monet.
I used the print out that my director gave me which was by Johanna Spaulding.
I read the short bio quickly and then our community met in the sanctuary at our church building to do art together.
It was a fun fact to learn that one of his paintings was named Impression: Sunrise that inspired the impressionist paintings.
For the activity, the students completed the activity in Discovering Great Artists.
We encouraged students to do dabs of paint by getting their paint brushes loaded with paint and then smooshing their paintbrushes down onto the paper to create small strokes/dabs of paint.
Remember to have your students bring a paint smock or play shirt for this quarter of CC!
Supplies needed for week 14 Great Artists:
- tempera paints, paintbrushes, paper, water to rinse between paint colors, and samples of Monet’s work
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Science Experiment
For science this week we did the Shape Up and Breakthrough experiments in the Van Cleeve book.
I use the printouts from CC Connected that my director provided me from the Ezine.
Shape Up Experiment
I like to start by reading the intro on the Ezine print out and then asking some or all of the questions in the Question and Research sections of the print out.
I then explain what the experiment will be (without actually doing it) and ask the students what their hypothesis is. Sometimes the class all agrees on one hypothesis and other times we have multiple hypotheses.
I have the students collect their data (usually just with their senses and not writing anything down) during the experiment and then I ask students to share what they observed during the Analysis portion of the script.
We found that our experiment did not go as “planned” so we discussed how different factors may have played into our results.
For instance, our masking tape roll had more mass and our jar lids weren’t taped the best so they wobbled a bit going down the ramp.
We ended by reading the conclusion on the Ezine print out.
Breakthrough Experiment
We conducted this experiment in the same order as the Shape Up experiment. This one was really quick as I pre-cut the paper into a circle.
We ended up changing the cone shape to have different levels of “sharpness” if that makes sense. We would un do the tape and redo the tape to create pointer and less pointer cones to experiment with different aerodynamic shapes.
This helped fill the time and inspire more conversation.
CC Cycle 2 Week 16 Review
For review this week, we did a cake walk.
This is a simple game to both play and set up which is great on days you need something easy.
It also made it easy to get through all of the review work.

How to set up the cake walk:
- Arrange 7-9 photos of cake on the ground. I found my cakes on Canva and printed a few chocolate cakes, a few carrot cakes, and a few birthday cakes. You want more than one of each cake so that students don’t have to answer the review by themselves (unless you want to challenge them more)
- Write “chocolate,” “carrot,” and “birthday” onto popsicle sticks. I also decided to add an “all” stick so everyone has to answer and some combo sticks “chocolate and carrot,” “carrot and birthday,” and “birthday and chocolate.” This helped with variety and to keep the students paying attention and have something to root for.
- Save all 7 timeline songs for review that week onto a playlist on your phone.
How to play cake walk:
- Have each student stand next to or on a cake (I laminated mine so I can play again in the future)
- Play the timeline song starting at the earliest week for review and inform the students to walk in a circle around/on the cakes. Pause the timeline song frequently and have the students stand next to their cake.
- Pull a popsicle stick out and have whoever is on that cake/those cakes answer a review question. You don’t need to ask Timeline review questions as you will listen to all of the Timeline as the background song.
Supplies needed for Cake Walk:
- 7-9 cake images (make sure to have more than one of each cake, I did 3 different cakes with 3 images of each)
- popsicle sticks
- marker to write on popsicle sticks
- technology to play Timeline songs
