Here is everything that I did with my Masters class for week 19 in cycle 2 of Classical Conversations!

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Memory Work

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Timeline

cc cycle 2 week 19 timeline

This week for timeline, I had my class play a game that I based off of the bomb game.

Instead of putting bombs on the back of some of the timeline cards, I place a “bad guy” of some sort. This week’s theme were dogs so we played Dog Catcher.

So, I placed pictures of dogs on the back of 6 cards and a dog catcher on the back of 1 card. I get these photos from Canva.

Every week we play this game (well, a variation of it since I do barn animals, cats, dogs, etc.) I ask the class if they want the “bad guy” to be a “good guy” instead. I’ll explain both ways to play.

Playing the “bad guy” version:

Sing the timeline song together. Have one student pick a card. If it’s a dog, the student “won” that round. Sing the timeline song again and then have the next student pick another card. Continue playing for 7 students/7 rounds. The object of the game is to not get the bad guy because we want to save as many dogs as possible. If the class succeeds in not picking the bad guy, the class wins and the tutor loses.

Playing the “good guy” version:

Essentially, I tell the class that the catcher is needing to collect all the dogs before something bad happens, like a storm is rolling in or something. Sing the timeline song together. Have one student pick a card. If it’s a dog, the student “lost” that dog to the storm. Sing the timeline song again and have the next student pick another card. Continue playing for 7 students/7 rounds. The object of the game is to get the catcher as soon as possible because every dog that gets picked after the catcher is found is saved! *You can keep it uplifting at the end and say “good news, all the dogs were found hiding under the deck anyway!” if you have a younger or more sensitive class.

This game is good for any age group but the Abecedarians may get confused if you give them the option of good guy or bad guy. I like giving the Masters this option because it keeps the game fresh each week.

If you have more than 7 students, you may want to skip this game since one student is left out. Or, have the 8th student be the one to flip over the cards to reveal, essentially leading the class.

Supplies needed to play Dog Catcher:

  • 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
  • 1 photo of a dog catcher and 6 photos of dogs (again, I get these from Canva)
  • tape to tape the photos to the back of the cards

Make sure to prepare this before getting to class and then put the cards up before class starts so there are no cheaters!

Approximate time it takes to play Dog Catcher: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Math

This week for math was really fun as many of my students love the geometry song on YouTube.

Here is the video to the song:

It was really hard to get my students to only sing the circle portion.

Since we are presenting this song for our end of year celebration, we decided to do just the entire song 7 times.

Encourage the class to snap their fingers, click their tongues, or clap their hands along with the song!

Supplies needed for Math: None

Approximate time it takes: 5 minutes (less if only singing the area of a circle)

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 History

My class loves playing Hot or Cold for history so we have done it almost every week since I introduced it week 3.

To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.

Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.

This week, we hid a small stop light I got from one of my son’s car play sets.

Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.

Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.

The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.

Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold

  • object to hide – I used a toy stop light figurine “…United Nations forces to STOP communist…”
  • timer – if students are likely to be indecisive on where to hide the object, set a 30 second timer

Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Latin

I reminded the class that a way to remember the perfect tense is with the sentence:

The farmer in the dell was having a perfect day so he said, “EEE”.

I got the sentence idea from Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube. Here is the video I referenced:

This week we simply sang through the song 2x and then sang it once halfway through to get the 7 repetitions.

Supplies needed for Latin: None

Approximate time needed for Latin: 1 minute

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Science

I found this song by Joys of a CC Mom on YouTube for weeks 19-21 science.

The tune goes along to the tune of John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Here is the YouTube video:

This week I decided we would rub our hands together, increasing in speed with each repetition.

Our hands would generate heat, demonstrating the first law of thermodynamics.

We started going pretty slowly and by the time we got to repetition 7 our speed was rather quick and our hands were quite hot!

It was kind of a work out to move our hands so quickly and keep up with the singing but it was worth it. It brought back memories of the math times tables exercises.

Supplies needed for science: None

Approximate time needed for science: 4 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 English

This week I found a catchy video on YouTube by Wendy Westerfield. She has a lot of fun upbeat tunes if you want to check her out!

Here is the song:

I also had the class act out different verbs. Here’s what we did:

  1. I read the new grammar sentence.
  2. I introduced the song and said I was singing, in which singing is a gerund.
  3. Then I told the class “we are swimming” (another gerund) and had them act out swimming as we sang the song.
  4. “We are cooking breakfast” act and sing
  5. “We are jumping” act and sing
  6. “We are dancing” act and sing
  7. “We are reading” act and sing

My class liked the activity for this one and it was zero prep on my part!

Supplies needed for English: None

Approximate time needed for English – 4 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Geography

cc cycle 2 week 19 geography

This week I found a quick song by JoJoHomeschools on YouTube.

Here is the video:

To get our repetitions in, this is what I did:

  1. I read the components of the Southeastern Asia Countries
  2. I read and had them trace the locations on their maps
  3. I said show me Taiwan/North Korea/South Korea/Philippines/Guam
  4. I introduced the song to them
  5. I had the class sing the song with me as we pointed to the countries for repetitions 5 and 6
  6. Singing all together
  7. Questions

Here are the review questions I asked for the Southeastern Asia Countries:

  1. What continent are North Korea and South Korea on? (Asia) – I did this one to help them remember to think about the title/prompt with these countries
  2. The islands of Taiwan, Philippines, and Guam are in what ocean? (Pacific)

Supplies needed for geography:

  • dry erase map for each student
  • dry erase marker for each student
  • eraser for each student

Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Composers & Orchestra

This week was very simple, as it was just an introduction to classical music by Beethoven, Brahms, and Dvorak.

I was told to not tell the class who the composures were and just let the class listen to each song.

Before I started the songs, I did go over a print out explaining classical and romantic periods of music – what instruments they tended to have for each style and the typical expression/tone/style of the music.

Unfortunately I don’t know who the print out was by as my director gave it to me but the point is to do a very simple and quick introduction. The music is about 22 minutes long!

I also had the class lay down on the floor in a dark room. Everyone was great about spreading out – I have a large classroom which helps – so this alone aided in having a quiet and focused classroom.

I also bring in my bluetooth speaker.

You can find the songs for this unit at the Classical Music for Dummies website. I recommend downloading them to your phone’s files rather than trying to connect to WiFi or use your data at your CC facility.

Supplies needed for week 19 Composers:

  • bluetooth speaker – optional, but great for larger rooms
  • Classical Music for Dummies book (to create a quick intro if you don’t have a print out like my director provided for me)
  • Classical Music for Dummies songs (#s 4, 5, and 6) downloaded to your phone

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Science Experiment

For science this week we made paper airplanes!

This was a fun science project, as we talked about aerodynamics and gravity. We also reviewed week 16’s science experiment when we discussed aerodynamics and whether flat pieces of paper or cones fell through the air faster.

I used the Ezine print out as my prompt and had the class make airplanes. We had a competition at the end where we had a clear winner!

Don’t forget to have students write their names on their planes before the competition.

I placed a piece of tape on the floor to mark where each plane should be thrown from, just to keep it super fair!

It’s fun to bring in some paper airplane designs. I had a couple designs printed out and also brought in my son’s paper airplane book.

CC Cycle 2 Week 19 Review

For review this week, I decided to “extend” the science time. We did all that we were required to complete during science, including the competition.

But for review, I decided to give them another chance at designing airplanes. I also gave them colored pencils to personalize their airplanes.

Review was super quick, as I simply asked them questions as they worked on their new designs.

We had very minimal airplanes “taking off” during review time. This review activity might not be best for the youngest class, as they may spend more time flying planes than reviewing, but my class did great!

Supplies needed for review:

  • paper for folding planes
  • colored pencils to color planes
