Here is everything that I plan to do for Classical Conversations CC Cycle 3 Week 2 in my Masters class!
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Memory Work
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Timeline
This week for timeline, I plan for us to play the game Sticky Hand.

You may want to remind your class to keep their sticky hands to themselves, even the Masters!
This game is really is to play:
- Lay the Timeline cards on a table or hard floor. Give each student a sticky hand. (You might want to do Timeline last if you don’t want them playing with the sticky hands throughout all of grammar!)
- Listen to/sing the Timeline song once through. Have the first student come up with a sticky hand and grab a Timeline card with the sticky hand’s hand. Pull the card out and put it away/hide it.
- Sing the Timeline song again and have the next student grab a card. Continue playing for all 7 repetitions.
If you have 8 students, have two students go together in the beginning to remove 2 cards at once. Then, continue playing one at a time.
This game also tests the memory of the class since cards are being put away/hidden each time through.
To make it easier for a younger/newer class, you can keep the cards there and just have the students try to get a card each time.
If the sticky hands are too distracting, next time you can just bring one sticky hand for everyone to share.
I bought a “party favor” size on Amazon for cheap!
Supplies needed to play Sticky Hands:
- 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
- Sticky hands – one per student ideally but you can share one as well
Approximate time it takes to play Sticky Hands: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Math
For the Masters class, I like to do minute-to-win it type of games or mathercise.
This week, I plan to play a dice stacking game with popsicle sticks.
This game works best for a class of seven students or less. If you have eight students, have the first two students go at the same time, then one student at a time after that so that there are only seven repetitions.
If you have less than seven students, do one for each student and then you can either just say the facts quickly for the remaining repetitions or hold competitions between the top competitors.
To play the dice stacking game, give every student one popsicle stick/tongue depressor.
Give one student (or two, see note above) five dice. Have the rest of the class recite the math fact one time through while the person with the dice plays.
The student with the dice needs to put the popsicle stick in their mouth while stacking dice onto the other end of the popsicle stick.

When the first time through the math fact is over, the next person gets to play.
Whoever gets the most dice stacked will win.
I might try to do the 3s and the 4s at the same time so they can just toss their sticks when their turn is over instead of circling back. But that might be too much time they are holding the popsicle stick in their mouth so I’ll have to see how it goes.
The person playing doesn’t do any recitation, just the students who aren’t playing that round.
Supplies needed to play dice stack:
- 5 to 10 dice
- one popsicle stick per student
Approximate time it takes to play dice stack: 6 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 History
Last year my class loved playing Hot or Cold for history and since I have mostly the same class, I decided I’ll do it again this year.
If they decide they are over it, I’ll come up with something else and update these plans as I go!
To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together.
Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.
This week, I plan to bring in 4th of July/red white and blue party favor type of things. I have lots of things I picked up with it being America’s 250th at the Dollar Store this year so I’ll just rotate through.
Have one parent bring one student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.
Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.
The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins.
If the student finds it before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.
Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold:
- object to hide – I plan to use something red, white, and blue
Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Latin
This week, I plan to make notecards where students need to find their matching partner.
Each repetition, we will turn in our cards, shuffle, and pass them out again.
To keep the game moving, I will likely say all of the repetitions each time while they are finding their matching partner.
Since there are only six cards and I have eight students, if we don’t have anyone absent, I will probably have one of them be the reader and the other be the checker.
That way, we get multiple repetitions in at once.
Here is my thinking:
- Pass out the cards and tell the class they need to find their matching partner while I (or a “left out” student) reads the grammar.
- Have the partnered students read their cards. The left out student (or another left out student if 8 total) can also check for accuracy.
- Collect the cards, shuffle, then re hand them out, making sure that a different person is “left out” this time while that student reads the grammar.
- Have the partnered students read their cards.
- Collect the cards, shuffle, give back out, and read the grammar.
- Have the partners read their cards.
- Everyone says together as we hand in the cards.
Supplies needed for Latin:
- six notecards, one for each english and latin word
Approximate time needed for Latin: 4 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Science
I found another fun song by one of our favorite CC YouTubers, Home Video Variety Show that also has hand motions:
Here is the order I plan to present science to get all seven repetitions in:
- Read the question and say the answer, making sure to say “The bones that make up the axial skeleton are…”
- Read the question and have the class answer
- Introduce the hand motions to the class
- Do the hand motions together
- Introduce the song to the class
- Practice the song with hand motions with the class
- Sing and do hand motions together
Supplies needed for science: None
Approximate time needed for science: 4 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 English
Since we have the math facts that take up a lot of time, I am planning to do a quick song for English.
In future weeks, I will be using hand motions to help with all of the different tenses so I will introduce the hand motion for present participle now – point down while saying present participle.
Here is the song I found that is by Carol Giraldi which goes to the tune of Happy Birthday:
Here are the quick 7 repetitions:
- Read the grammar.
- Introduce the hand motion of pointing down while saying present participle.
- Practice the hand motion while saying the grammar.
- Introduce the song while doing the hand motion.
- Have the students sing with me and do the hand motion for the remaining 3 repetitions.
Supplies needed for English: none
Approximate time needed for English – 2 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Geography
This year I want to try something new for my Masters class. If it goes well, I plan to do it all year.
Instead of tracing maps, I want to challenge my class to draw the US, week by week.
My director gives us large copies of the CC maps, one for each student. Last year, the students traced the maps.
I picked up some 11×7 paper. I plan for each student to keep their map all year (in a folder I will take home each week) and to build on the map each week.
I believe the Masters class will be more than capable of doing this because my 5 year old was able to draw this map her first try:

Here is what I plan to do to get our seven repetitions in:
1. Read the states and capitals for the week while the students put their names on their papers.
2 & 3. Have the students draw just the states we are doing this week, with their dots for capitals, on their papers while I read the states and capitals 2x through.
4. Show me where _____ is… (all 5 locations)
5. Tell me what this is… (all 5 locations) as I point to my map on my board.
6 & 7. Everyone reads all the states & capitals while passing their maps back to me to put away for next week.
Supplies needed for geography:
- large map for each student
- 11×7 paper for each student
- pencil for each student
- optional – Draw the USA by Kristin J. Draeger to reference if students are stuck – she blobs the shapes of each state to make it easy to draw
Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Fine Arts
I love our fine arts unit studying fine arts!
To start the class, I plan on drawing shapes on my whiteboard (see my tutor white board here) and having students come up to draw the line of symmetry on them.
I will define symmetry/mirror images and we can discuss if certain drawings look better with symmetry.
I have some print outs of symmetrical buildings/structures in the US that we can look at as well. I just found them on Google and printed them.
For their turn, I plan to give them some options of USA themed symmetrical work that they can draw.
I will probably bring in two levels of options – one that has half of it drawn already and students need to mirror the other half and examples where they need to draw the whole thing – taking half of it at a time before mirroring it.
Supplies needed for week 2 fine arts:
- Paper for each student
- Pencil for each student
- Colored pencils/markers/crayons for students to share
- Print outs of symmetrical pieces of art
- Print outs of mirrored images with one side blank to complete by the student
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Presentations
This year, I plan to have a skill of focus each week. This is in the Foundations guide but I am going to change the order up a bit!
For the second week, I plan to have the Masters focus on timing, just like I did last week.
Last year, I had several students who wanted to speak for over 5 minutes and some only wanted to speak for 30 seconds.
I plan to have two pieces of construction or cardstock paper – one yellow and one red.
I will hold up the yellow after one minute to let them know they are halfway done.
I will hold up the red to let them know they are at 2 minutes and should be wrapping up so there is still time for questions.
Of course, they can talk for less than 2 minutes. But, these papers should help them know if they are going on for too long.
My goal is to help teach pacing to them with this method.
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Science
This week is Van Cleave’s experiment #70.
I plan to open the discussion with reading Psalm 119:18, as suggested on the CC weekly helps.
I love the new (I think? – I’ve never seen these!) weekly helps. I’ll continue to follow the outline for that but also mix in a bit of a script my director gave me.
(Here is the script from my director by Tiffany Pena)
The script is good for providing more information after the students have answered their own ideas as we explore what we know about the eye.
It is definitely not required, as we are here to allow them to explore. But, it is useful when we need to fill time.
Of course, I will follow the actual experiment in Van Cleave’s once we are done introducing the topic.
My goal this year is to not read from a script, but rather read the scripts ahead of time and have the general idea in my head.
I will likely still bring the script to class in order to reference. But our tutor training this year motivated me to try to make it feel more natural this year and leave more room for exploration.
If time allows, I will let the students make their own flip photos (something other than the winking face.)
Supplies needed for hands-on science:
- Van Cleave’s 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre, and Incredible Experiments
- Copies of Psalm 119, one for each student
- 20 gauge wire
- Pencil
- Bowl
- Water
CC Cycle 3 Week 2 Review
For review this week, I plan to have the class play Guts or Gab?
Guts is basically a dare and gab is a truth.
I got the game here on Teachers Pay Teachers.

This is another fun way to get to know each other in the class at the beginning of the year.
The format is: ask a review question, then have a student draw either from the Guts pile or the Gab pile, do the action, then ask another review question and so forth.
Since there are only two weeks of material to review here, you likely won’t need to set a timer on which pile to choose from.
I plan to play this game throughout the year, so as I go, I will say they only have 5 seconds to choose either a guts or a gab card or I choose for them.
Supplies needed for Guts or Gab?:
- Guts or Gab cards from Teachers Pay Teachers
