Here is everything that I plan to do with my Masters class for week 7 in cycle 3 of Classical Conversations!

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Memory Work

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Timeline

This week for timeline, I plan for us to play the game Barnyard.

This game is just like the Dog Catcher game that I described in Week 1, but with barn animals and a barn!

barnyard cc timeline ideas cc cycle 3 week 7 timeline ideas tutor plans masters

Since we have Jesus the Messiah as a timeline card, I plan to play the barn as the “good guy” with Jesus the Messiah on the back of that card. We shall see if the class catches on!

The class needs to find the barn first/toward the beginning of the game. I will tell them that the barn will save the animals from the storm.

All the animals found after the barn is flipped over is saved from the storm.

Supplies needed to play Barnyard:

  • 7 Timeline cards pertaining to the week
  • 6 barn animal photos and 1 barn photo (or just write “name of barn animal” or “barn” on sticky notes)

Approximate time it takes to play Barnyard: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Math

Yay for only one times table this week! Since I have the Masters class we say the entire equation.

This week, I plan for us to do a minute-to-win it game.

cc cycle 3 week 7 math ideas masters class tutor plans

Players will need to stack as many dice on their desk using only two spoons.

This game works best for a class of seven students or less. If you have eight students, you’ll need to have the first two players play at the same time.

If you have less than seven students, do one for each student and then add parents/tutor into the mix so you can do the tables 7 times.

Supplies needed for dice stack:

  • 5 dice
  • plastic spoons

Approximate time it takes: 4 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 History

As usual, we will play Hot or Cold.

To play Hot or Cold, listen to the history song one time all together. Then, show the class the item you will be hiding.

This week, we will hide something that is red/white/blue. I basically just saved a bunch of 4th of July party favor type items to cycle through this year.

Have one parent bring the chosen student outside into the hallway while the rest of the class chooses a place to hide the item.

Once hidden (tip – only give them 30 seconds so it’s not a big time suck), invite the student back in. Have the class sing the history song loudly if the student is close to finding the object and quietly if the student is farther from the object.

The student has six repetitions to find it. If they find it in time, they win, if not, the class wins. If the student finds in before six repetitions are over, have everyone sing or say the history song as fast as they can for the remaining repetitions.

Supplies needed to play Hot or Cold:

  • Object to hide

Approximate time it takes to play Hot or Cold: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Latin

This week, I plan to do a song and hand motions by Driven By Grace.

This song will continue for all of the Latin nouns, weeks 6-8, but here is the video for just this week’s grammar.

To get in the 7 repetitions:

  1. Read all of the grammar for correct pronunciation
  2. Read again for correct pronunciation
  3. Introduce the hand motions
  4. Do the hand motions together
  5. Introduce the song with hand motions
  6. Do the song and hand motions all together for two repetitions.

Supplies needed for Latin:

  • none

Approximate time needed for Latin: 3 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Science

This week I plan to introduce a song by Nicole Bellow on YouTube.

The song goes to the tune of Forrest Frank’s Lemonade.

Here is the order I presented science to get all seven repetitions in:

  1. Read the question and say the answer, making sure to say “Four parts of the excretory system are…”
  2. Read the question and have the class answer
  3. Introduce the song to the class
  4. Sing the song with the class
  5. Sing the song all together
  6. Sing all
  7. Sing all

Supplies needed for science: None

Approximate time needed for science: 4 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 English

This week we will use the hand motions we have learned so far to recite the different verb tenses for “to rise.”

Here is the song and hand motions that I will use by Driven By Grace which goes to the tune of If You’re Happy and You Know it:

If the song is just too much on top of the hand movements, we might just chant it. I’ll see what the class wants to do/can handle given our quick time frame!

Here are the 7 repetitions:

  1. Read the grammar.
  2. Introduce the hand motions for each part.
  3. All practice the hand motions for each part.
  4. Introduce the song (or do a chant) while doing the hand motion.
  5. Have the students sing with me (or do a chant) and do the hand motion for the remaining 3 repetitions.

Supplies needed for English: none

Approximate time needed for English – 4 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Geography

This year we’ve been trying something new in my Masters class.

Instead of tracing maps, I want to challenge my class to draw the US, week by week.

My director gives us large copies of the CC maps, one for each student. Last year, the students traced the maps.

I picked up some 11×8.5 paper. I plan for each student to keep their map all year (in a folder I will take home each week) and to build on the map each week.

Here is what I plan to do to get our seven repetitions in:

1. Read the states and capitals for the week while the students put their names on their papers.

2 & 3. Have the students draw just the states we are doing this week, with their dots for capitals, on their papers while I read the states and capitals 2x through.

4. Show me where _____ is… (all 5 locations)

5. Tell me what this is… (all 5 locations) as I point to my map on my board.

6 & 7. Everyone reads all the states & capitals while passing their maps back to me to put away for next week.

Supplies needed for geography:

  • large map for each student
  • 14×8.5 paper for each student
  • pencil for each student
  • optional – Draw the USA by Kristin J. Draeger to reference if students are stuck – she blobs the shapes of each state to make it easy to draw

Approximate time needed for geography: 5 minutes

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Tin Whistle

Tin whistle time is upon us!

I plan to have us first sing Yankee Doodle and make sure to say, “one, two, ready, sing” to get everyone at the same starting time.

We will talk about how voice was the first instrument invented and I will ask “what did we have to do to make a song?” (sing at the same speed, start/stop together, etc)

I will introduce the parts of the tin whistle and the definitions.

  • Barrel – long, conical metal section
  • Finger holes – 6 holes in the barrel for playing notes
  • Mouthpiece – plastic piece at the top
  • Fipple – share edge on the mouthpiece hole

We will sing the tin whistle parts song to the tune of Do You Know the Muffin Man?

I plan to remind them of the rest position – mouthpiece on the chin.

We will likely play each note together and individually.

I doubt we will play Yankee Doodle on the first day, as I want to make sure we have time to draw our tin whistle (remind of OiLS!) and label the parts.

That being said, if anyone knows how to play it already, I may ask for volunteers. I will also encourage the class to start practicing at home.

Supplies needed for week 7 tin whistle:

  • each student needs to bring their tin whistle (give students a pencil to finger along if they forgot their whistle at home)
  • paper and pencil for each student to draw and label their tin whistle

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Science

This week we start our anatomy project! I am so excited for this and wish I could have done this when I was in school.

We will tackle the brain, heart, kidney, and bladder this week.

I have heard from tutors that have gone through this cycle before that this can be quite time consuming.

I will likely have each student start coloring right away.

Encourage the students to color different body parts at different times so not everyone will need a red pencil for the heart at the same time, for example.

I plan to inform everyone to label all of their parts with their names so I can keep everything together in my expandable file folder.

I will likely follow the script from my director this year since she outlines it nicely with Naming, Attending, Memorizing, and Expressing.

(Here is the script from my director by Tiffany Pena)

But I also plan to have the students review science grammar from weeks 3, 4, and 7 for what we already know/memorizing.

Supplies needed for hands-on science:

  • My Body copies of the heart, brain, kidney, and bladder
  • Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Colored pencils, crayons, or markers

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Presentations

This year, I plan to have a skill of focus each week.

For the seventh week, I plan to have the Masters focus on body language.

I will remind the class before the first presentation that we want to:

  • keep our bodies still, unless using hands to expressively speak to our audience
  • stand tall
  • keep head up and facing audience
  • friendly face

At the end of their presentation, I will ask the class to give feedback on the body language.

Thumbs up for good overall and thumbs down for distracting body language.

Of course, the class isn’t likely to all give the same answer but we can see the overall opinion.

You may need to remind your class to only give the feedback at the end of the presentation, not during, as that can be distracting.

CC Cycle 3 Week 7 Review

For review this week, I plan to have the class play Four in a Row.

You can do this on a whiteboard or a piece of paper.

I put together a small whiteboard that has whiteboard tape separating the different sections like a grid. This way I can reuse the board periodically for the game and also play it at home with my kids.

four in a row cc review game masters tutor plans

To play Four in a Row:

  • Separate the class into two groups & have them name their team
  • Determine a way to decide who will go first – flip a coin, pick a number, rock/paper/scissors, etc.
  • Have the first team pick a week and subject to answer the first review question. If they get it right, they get that grid spot on the board. If they miss the question, the other team gets a chance to answer it and claim that spot.
  • Ask the second team to pick a week and subject for the second question. Continue playing as described.
  • The goal of the game is to get four in a row. I use two different colored dry erase markers but you could also do Xs for one team and Os for the other, etc.
  • Whichever team gets four in a row first wins. Continue playing until all possible 4-in-a-row spots are claimed.

When there aren’t any more 4-in-a-row places left, I just ask the remaining review questions to the whole class as we work on cleaning the classroom and preparing our bags for lunch.

Supplies needed for Four in a Row:

  • Pen and paper for paper option
  • Whiteboard and whiteboard markers for whiteboard option
